The Vespers Office

To Be Observed on the Hour or Half Hour Between 5 and 8 p.m

The Call to Prayer

Sing to the LORD, you servants of his;* give thanks for the remembrance of his holiness. For his wrath endures but the twinkling of an eye,* his favor for a lifetime.

Psalm 30:4-5

The Request for Presence

Show us the light of your countenance, O God,* and come to us.

based on Psalm 67:1

The Greeting

Your statutes have been like songs to me* wherever I have lived as a stranger. I remember your Name in the night, O LORD,* and dwell upon your law. This is how it has been with me,* because I have kept your commandments.

Psalm 119:54-5

The Hymn

O God of Truth

O God of truth, O Lord of might, Disposing time and change aright, Who clothes the splendid morning ray And gives the heat at noon of day:

Extinguish now each sinful fire And banish every ill desire; And while You keep the body whole Shed forth Your peace upon the soul.

Grant this, O Father ever one With Jesus Christ Your only Son And Holy Ghost, whom all adore, Reigning and blessed forevermore.

adapted from A SHORT BREVIARY

The Refrain for the Vespers Lessons

Righteousness shall go before him,* and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

Psalm 85:13

The Vespers Psalm

Turn Again to Your Rest, O My Soul

The LORD watches over the innocent;* I was brought very low, and he helped me. Turn again to your rest, O my soul,* for the LORD has treated you well. For you have rescued my life from death,* my eyes from tears, and my feet from stumbling. I will walk in the presence of the LORD* in the land of the living.

Psalm 116:5-8

The Refrain

Righteousness shall go before him,* and peace shall be a pathway for his feet.

The Cry of the Church

Even so come, Lord Jesus!

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be your Name. May your kingdom come, and your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil; for yours are the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

The Prayer Appointed for the Week

Grant me, O Lord, to trust in you with all my heart; for, as you always resist the proud who confide in their own strength, so you never forsake those who make their boast of your mercy; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

The Concluding Prayer of the Church

May Almighty God grant me a peaceful night and a perfect end. Amen.
