Statement by Tri-Faith Initiative Board of Directors on Executive Order Regarding Terrorism and Immigration
On behalf of the Tri-Faith Initiative, we condemn President Trump’s executive order on immigration and its suspension of the refugee resettlement program. In addition to not being consistent with our American values, it is ineffective and potentially counterproductive to the stated goal of protecting the country while at the same time damaging to our international relationships.
The executive order is also inconsistent with Tri-Faith’s mission of building interfaith relations. We strive to promote dialogue, transcend differences, foster acceptance and build bridges of respect and trust between Judaism, Christianity and Islam. Regardless of varying interpretations, the executive order will be perceived worldwide as a ban on Muslim refugees and detrimental to our country’s standing in the world.
Tri-Faith thanks those public officials who have spoken out on this ill-considered action and extends a special thank you to U.S. Senator Ben Sasse of Nebraska. We encourage all citizens to reach out to their elected officials via phone, email or letter to register their disapproval. Contact information for all members of Congress are can be found at www.house.govand www.senate.gov.
For those who live in the Omaha region, we encourage participation in a peaceful vigil to be held at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday, January 31 at Turner Park, 3101 Dodge Street, to show immigrants and refugees that we support and welcome them. Tri-Faith is a partner in organizing the vigil together with a consortium of non-profits involved with immigrant and refugee advocacy.
